What is so great that God would give his own son for it? What is so important that Jesus would die for it? The answer is: Us! Humanity! John 3:16 begins with an amazing declaration about God: "God so loved the world." And, it was not a perfect world that he loved. It was a world in which we as humanity are guilty of much evil and wrong doing. Still, he loved us (Romans 5:10).
The second statement in John 3:16 tells how much he loved the world. He loved it to the extent that "he gave his only begotten son" for us. In his love and wisdom, God found a way in which he could remain just and at the same time give mercy and life to an unjust humanity. He did it by one of us: One of us who was of immeasurable worth in his sight. This man was literally God's son (Luke 1:35).
Jesus also loved us. He loved us so much that he was willing to give his life for the rest of us (Ephesians 5:2). God valued the love of Jesus and his sacrifice so much that he accepts the death of his beloved, sinless, human son for the redemption of the rest of us (1 Peter 1:18,19; Revelation 5:9).
Yet, the next phrase in John 3:16 is also critical: "that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." There is a condition to God's giving everlasting life to a human being. That condition is that a person would trust in and rely on his son. God has determined that unending life would come through one of us - his son Jesus (Romans 5:17). God extends unending life to those who will love and trust his son. We should love Jesus as God does (John 14:21). In doing so, we come to common ground with God – Peace with God.
